How do you handle your social media online?

As is often the case with traditional email, social media can quickly consume your time and actually make you less productive if you allow it to get the better of you.

I remember the first time I got Facebook, I thought it to be an incredible site, connecting with friends, making new friends, the ability to post pictures, it became like a popularity contest. However, you quickly realize just how much time it can occupy, there were times that I would be on Facebook for no good reason other than trying to build my friend count, I was not interested in building relationships, I just wanted that number to be higher.

I suppose that it is one of the caveats of the social media in general, it is like there is a meta-game that plays over top each of the platforms, like achievements in video games, social media has introduced an achievement system into real life.

For Facebook, it’s your friend count, Twitter, your follower count, FourSquare, the number of badges you have. While there is value in it, all too often the value is overlooked and replaced with wasted time.

The scary thing is that I’ve touched only on a few examples where social media can become an absolute time sink. Between Linkedin, Tumblr, RSS Feeds, endless amounts of blogs, and various website to visit, I could wonder where the day of productive work goes.

I came across an interesting article at http://www.biztipsblog.com/2010/03/the-dr-pepper-method-for-managing-social-media.html

on how to use the Dr. Pepper method for managing social media. A quick excerpt from the article:

Remember the old Dr Pepper line…Have a Dr Pepper at 10/2 and 4? I just have in my personal schedule to bring up a firefox that I’ve saved all my social accounts in as tabs. I bring it up around 10 2 and 4 every day, tab thru them and answer queries, check updates from people, and interact. Usually it takes 5-10 minutes.
That way I’m online and paying personal attention at least three times a day w/o allowing my social web activity to suck away work time. I sometimes get on later or earlier in the day. But I nearly always do my 10/2/and 4 to answer queries, etc. It works pretty well and keeping me connected.

Have a look at the article, it’s something that I would like to try in my own routine to see how it works.

#TC10 Module 1 Day 1

Well now that all the pre-work is done, I’m ready to embark on the first module of the thirty day challenge.

It is an exciting proposition and after having read through the forums and hearing from the experiences of others I’m feeling more motivated that ever.

The Challenge: A Disclaimer

It is refreshing to see the candor that the 30 Day Challenge offers to its viewers regarding what to expect out of this exercise. More often than not we are bombarded with ads and promotions that claim to provide a system or methodology that will make us rich. While some of these systems may be viable ways to make money online many are simply re-hashed and re-packaged programs designed to make the creator money.

There is certainly nothing wrong with this approach, as it is simply another way that people are trying to do business, however, I feel that in some ways it’s a sham. Many of these advertised systems paint the picture of online businesses with rose-colored glasses, offering systems that make it easy to make hundreds of dollars a day with very little work, or one of their favorites, on auto-pilot.

This is never really the case, because if it were that easy, then everyone would be doing it. The stark difference in the 30 Day Challenge is Ed Dale offering a view that is so much more genuine that the other offerings that I have seen.

There is no promise that the end of the course everyone will be successful making thousands of dollars a month. There is only the claim that the course will offer a best-in-class learning foundation with the pillars necessary to make a successful online business.

It really is an exciting venture and Ed Dale with his humility and openness is certainly making for an interesting experience thus far.

Chrome is the new black

So day 3 of the pre-challenge calls to install Chrome.  I always used Chrome on my old Samsung netbook because it worked so well on the screen real estate.  However, since using a larger monitor I have been using either Firefox or Safari.

I suppose that it is out of habit more than anything else.  After installing Chrome, I must say that it is quite fast.  Before one of the drawbacks I found with the browser was the lack of extensions, and while I was never a very heavy extension user on either Safari or Firefox, I always found them a nice feature to have.

I been called to install several extensions which I think will no doubt assist in the 30 Day Challenge.

Among them include: Chromed Bird, Kuber Pagerank Checker, SEO Quake, Ultimate Chrome Flag, Google Global, and RSS Subscription Extension.

Guess we’ll see how all these different things interact with one another.

USTREAM, You_re On. Free LIVE VIDEO Streaming, Online Broadcasts. Create webcasts, video chat, stream videos on the Internet. Live streaming videos, TV shows

Ustream, I stream, we all stream for Ustream?

So, as part of a Pre-Challenge Training regiment that the 30 Day Challenge has me working on is getting signed up with Ustream.  A few of the reasons for doing so was to get a direct line to the challenge people as well as to highlight the broadcasting capabilities of the site.

From my initial impression, it does seem to be more robust than youtube in the sense that it is able to more easily do live broadcasting and features a direct ability to interact with your audience while you are recording your show.

Content wise, I have not been able to poke around as much, though you can link it up to your Facebook account, however, so many sites are doing that these days, still need to see the full value of doing so.

Day 1 of the Pre-Challenge was pretty easy, just setting up the Ustream account and getting more familiar with the site.
